Backing Up and Restoring Personal Data

You can back up and restore most of the data on a BlackBerry® smartphone, including messages, organizer data, fonts, saved searches, and browser bookmarks.

You should regularly create and save a backup file on a computer, especially before updating any software.

Maintaining an up-to-date backup file on a computer might allow you to recover device data if the device is lost, stolen, or corrupted by an unforeseen issue.

Back up personal data

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0.1

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
  2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  3. Click Backup and Restore.
  4. Perform one of the following actions:
    1. To back up all your device data, click Back up.
    2. To encrypt the data, click Options. Click Encrypt backup data. Click OK. Click Back up. Type a password.
    3. To back up specific device data, click Advanced. In the Device databases section, click a database. Click the left arrow icon. On the File menu, click Save As.
  5. To back up on-board device memory, click Options. Click Back up on-board device memory. Click OK. Click Back up.
BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0
  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
  2. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device > Back up.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To back up all your device data, click Full.
    • To back up all your device data except for email messages, click Quick.
    • To select which types of device data to back up, click Custom. Select the check box next to the data you want to back up.
  4. If your device includes built-in media storage and you want to back up data that is stored there, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage check box.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • To change the default name for the backup file, in the File name field, type a new name.
    • To encrypt your data, select the Encrypt backup file check box. Type a password.
    • To save your settings so that you are not prompted to set these options again when you back up your device, select the Don't ask for these settings again check box.
  6. Click Back Up.

Restore personal data

CAUTION: When you restore data to a BlackBerry smartphone, all files in the on-board device memory and device memory are deleted before the backup file is restored.

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
  2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  3. Click Backup and Restore.
  4. Perform one of the following actions:
    • To restore all the device data in a backup file, click Restore. Double-click an .ipd backup file. If the backup file is encrypted, type the password that you set during encryption.
    • To restore specific device data in a backup file, click Advanced. On the File menu, click Open. Double-click an .ipd backup file. In the Desktop file databases section, click a database. Click the right arrow icon.
BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0
  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
  2. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device > Restore.
  3. Select a backup file that contains the data you want to restore.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • To restore all your device data, click All device data and settings.
    • To select which data you want to restore, click Select device data and settings. Select the check box beside the data type that you want to restore.
    • If your device includes built-in media storage, and you want restore it, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage check box.
  5. If the backup file is encrypted, type the password that you set to encrypt.
  6. Click Restore.
